The Heist
Eureka Skydeck
In tandem with Art Processors, the technologists behind MONA art museum, I worked with a team of creatives to develop an interactive GPS-based audio adventure.
Visitors to Melbourne’s Eureka SkyDeck - the highest vantage point over Melbourne - were given custom phones and headsets. As they explored the view, they could participate in the audio game, the story of a jewel heist taking part at the landmarks visible below.
As the user moved throughout the space, GPS beacons concealed in the roof triggered the app, playing the next audio in the story. But where the user moved changed the story, ultimately deciding whether the user sided with the criminals or the police.
GPS-powered storytelling
GPS beacons are concealed in the roof of the Skydeck. When the user enters the zone covered by that beacon, a signal is sent to their device. The audio provides the next part of the story
Spatial decision making
Users make choices by moving in a direction, and when they trigger the relevant beacon, the next story element plays. If they remain in place, custom audio urges them to choose a direction.
Eight different endings
Based on the choices, a story path unfolds. The eight different endings range from siding with the police, to getting caught, to puling off the heist off the century.
